History

Burnham-on-Crouch offers a fascinating maritime history, highlighted by its historic wharfs.
The wharfs reflect the town's boatbuilding and seafaring heritage and are a very important part of the quay's landscape, past and present.

Early 1900's

The Pound beach in front of the Anchor steps was a popular spot for family get togethers and picnics, everyone dressed in their finest clothes. Picture taken from the newly named Vanguard jetty.

1905

Looking west along the sea wall in the early 1900's. These older boats are gaff rigged and mostly working boats rather than private yachts.

1919

1932

A Royal Burnham One Design (possibly Red Jacket) being launched in 1932 from Kings jetty. A big crowd has turned out to celebrate the launch. The Royal Burnham One Design yachts are still raced today on the Crouch today. William King’s yard in Burnham had an enviable reputation for building some of the finest wooden racing yachts. This jetty in front of the Kings Wharf flats is now nearing completion of a full refurbishment.

1930's

Looking west, laid up yachts are berthed against the sea wall between the old Royal Corinthian Yacht Club and the Royal Burnham Yacht Club. A paid hand is climbing the rig.

Early 1940's

The Pound beach looking east, private yachts and launches laid up against Vanguard jetty making repairs between the wars. The shingle beach was a great place for children to play.

1963

Same location as images 1 and 2 The beach is still busy with yachts. This view was shot from the 'new' Royal Corinthian Yacht Club in around 1963.
The original Corinthian Yacht Club can just be seen on the right.

1980's
